Cala Pilar

When the journey is part of paradise.

Menorca has beautiful beaches. Lots of them. But only a few can truly be experienced. Cala Pilar is one of them. Not because it’s the most convenient or the most accessible, but precisely the opposite. You don’t stumble upon this place by chance. You get there on foot, step by step, leaving the noise behind and gradually entering the wildest landscape in the north of the island.

At Minura Hotels, we believe that the best experiences aren’t always the easiest, but the ones you remember. And Cala Pilar is exactly that: a little adventure that begins long before you touch the sand.

The start: park and start walking

To get to Cala Pilar, you have to leave the car behind… and that’s good news. From the nearest car park, the route continues on foot along a path that winds through woods, open clearings and stretches of red earth. The walk takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on your pace, and partly follows the historic Camí de Cavalls, the route that circles the whole of Menorca.

It’s not a difficult walk, but the terrain is uneven in places, especially towards the end. That’s why we always recommend wearing closed, comfortable footwear. You don’t come here in a hurry. You come to enjoy the journey.

And you can tell that from the very first moment.

A path that tells the story of Menorca: Geology and Life

As you walk, the landscape changes and accompanies you. At the start, the forests of holm oaks and white pines offer shade and a pleasant sense of coolness. If you look closely at the holm oaks (Quercus ilex), you’ll see that many have twisted trunks; this is their way of adapting to the force of the Tramontana, the north wind that sculpts the island.

Further on, the path opens up, revealing the rugged character of the area. You are walking on the terrain of ‘Tramontana’ Menorca, the geologically oldest part of the island, dating back over 250 million years. The earth begins to take on reddish hues due to the Permian-Triassic clays and sandstones, foreshadowing what lies ahead.

If you know where to look, the path tells the whole story:

Resilient vegetation

You’ll see low-growing shrubs such as the mastic tree and the socarrall (a thorny species endemic to the Balearic Islands), which grow close to the ground to protect themselves from salt spray.

Dune systems

Upon reaching the coast, the dunes act as natural walls that hold the sand in place and protect the inland areas from marine erosion.

Wildlife in the sky

Look towards the clay cliffs. It is very common to see the red kite (miloca in Menorcan) gliding with its characteristic forked tail, or even the majestic osprey searching for prey in the crystal-clear waters of the marine reserve.

Tips for the explorer:

Plenty of water: There are no fountains or beach bars. Bring at least 1.5 litres per person.

Marine Reserve: You are in a protected area. The snorkelling here is in a league of its own; don’t forget your mask so you can see the Posidonia meadows and colourful fish.

The red clay: You may come across people applying clay to their skin. Although this is a popular tradition, remember that it accelerates the erosion of the slopes. Better to enjoy the clay just by looking at it!
