5 routes to enjoy the Camí de Cavalls
The Camí de Cavalls is not just a trail, it is the soul of the island. And while it is a paradise for hikers all year round, it is in September and October when the experience becomes magical. The reason is simple: the temperature is milder, the sun is not so harsh, and the landscape, with its palette of autumn colours, takes on a unique beauty. It is the perfect time to explore the island without rushing and without the hustle and bustle of summer.
Here we suggest 5 routes along the Camí de Cavalls, combining landscapes, history and the authentic flavour of Menorca, with all the practical information you need to make your adventure perfect.
Route 1: South Coast and its turquoise gems (From Cala Galdana to Cala en Bosc)
This stage is a classic for a reason: it offers some of the most iconic coves on the island. We start from Cala Galdana, a well-connected spot where our Minura Cala Galdana hotel is located, and we set off on a path that takes us to picture-postcard beaches such as Cala Macarella and Macarelleta. In this area, the path runs through a pine forest that offers shade on the hottest days. We continue towards Cala en Turqueta, one of the most photographed beaches in Menorca due to its white sand and intense turquoise waters. As we progress, the landscape becomes more rugged, leading us to smaller, quieter coves until we reach Cala en Bosc.
- Distance and approximate time: About 8-9 km, with a walking time of 3 to 4 hours, depending on your pace and stops. The terrain is fairly flat.
- How to get there and parking: The best option is to leave your car in Cala Galdana, or leave from your hotel if you are staying there. There is a car park nearby, but it is advisable to go early, even in September, as it is one of the most popular coves. At the end of the stage in Cala en Bosc, you have the option of taking the number 65 bus back to Ciutadella, and from there another bus (number 52) back to Cala Galdana.
Route 2: The Talayotic West and the beauty of the coast (From Cala en Bosc to Ciutadella)
If Route 1 has left you wanting more, you can continue on to Ciutadella, the former capital of Menorca. The route is a fascinating mix of rocky coastline and vestiges of the ancient Talayotic civilisation. We will pass by the imposing Artrutx lighthouse and enter a more arid landscape, with cliffs plunging into the sea. The path allows us to contemplate the wild beauty of this part of the island, with spectacular views of the Mediterranean.
- Distance and approximate time: About 10-11 km, with a walking time of 3 to 4 hours. The terrain is fairly flat and easy to walk on.
- How to get there and parking: You can drive to Cala en Bosc and leave your car in the free car park near the beach. At the end of the stage in Ciutadella, you can take the 65 bus back to Cala en Bosc. The bus is an excellent option if you don’t want to worry about your car.
Route 3: The east coast and the magic of the lighthouses (From Es Castell to Favàritx)
This stage takes us along the east coast of the island, an area marked by military history and the majesty of its lighthouses. Starting from Es Castell, the easternmost municipality in Spain, the trail leads us to La Mola de Maó and, finally, to the impressive Favàritx lighthouse. This lighthouse, with its black slate rocks, looks like something from another planet and is one of the icons of the island.
- Distance and approximate time: About 9-10 km, with a walking time of 3 to 4 hours. The terrain is low-medium difficulty, with some unevenness.
- How to get there and parking: Es Castell has parking options, although in summer the centre may have restrictions. There is free parking near the entrance to the village. However, the best option is the bus. There is a bus line (Line 02) that connects Maó with Es Castell. Access by car to the Favàritx Lighthouse is restricted from 1 June to 30 September. During this period, it is compulsory to use a shuttle bus (Line 43) that leaves from the bus station in Maó.
Route 4: Unspoilt nature in the heart of the north (From Cala Pilar to Cala d’Algaiarens)
This stage is a journey into the heart of Menorca’s most unspoilt and preserved areas. The route begins at the remote and spectacular Cala Pilar, famous for its reddish sand and dunes. The trail leads us through a landscape of fossilised dunes and low, dense vegetation that clings to the ground. It is a route that invites reflection and connection with nature in its purest form. The walk culminates at the beautiful Cala d’Algaiarens, also known as ‘La Vall’, a bay of great beauty with two beaches of fine sand and crystal-clear waters, protected by pine-covered hills.
- Distance and approximate time: About 9.7 km, with a walking time of 3 to 4 hours. The difficulty is medium, with uneven terrain and some climbs.
- How to get there and parking: Cala Pilar is one of the most remote points on the Camí de Cavalls and has no direct access by public transport, so the best option is to leave your car in the car park near the beach, although bear in mind that the last stretch is a 30-minute walk from the car park. For the return journey from Cala d’Algaiarens, there is a bus route (Line 62) that connects with Ciutadella, an excellent alternative if you have opted for public transport. If travelling by car, it is best to organise the journey with two vehicles or hire a taxi for the return to the starting point.
Route 5: The most picturesque southern coast (From Punta Prima to Binisafuller)
This stage invites us on a relaxed journey along the south-east coast of Menorca, an area marked by the tranquillity of its coves and the charm of its small villages. Starting from Punta Prima, just over 1 km from our Minura Sur Menorca hotel, with its iconic lighthouse, the trail leads us westwards, offering spectacular views of the islet of l’Aire. As we continue, the path winds its way through coves with crystal-clear waters such as Biniancolla and, above all, the photogenic fishing village of Binibeca Vell, with its white houses and narrow streets. The route ends at the quiet beach of Binisafuller, a haven of peace perfect for a swim at the end of the walk.
- Distance and approximate time: About 8 km, with a walking time of 2 to 3 hours, depending on your pace and stops. It is a very easy route, with flat terrain and no major difficulties.
- How to get there and parking: If you are staying at our Miunura Sur Menorca hotel, you can take our minibus to Punta Prima beach or you can drive there and leave your car in the public car parks in the area. There is a bus route (Line 92) that connects with Sant Lluís and Maó, making access easy. At the end of the stage, you can take the bus (Line 93) to Sant Lluís and then to Maó, from where you can return to your starting point. There is also parking around the cove, although it is limited. As it is a linear route, the most convenient option is to take public transport or a taxi back to the starting point.
In light of these suggestions, it is clear that the Camí de Cavalls is much more than just a trail: it is a gateway to the soul of Menorca. Each of its stages, whether the wild coast of the north, the turquoise coves of the south or the picturesque villages of the east, offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
To make the adventure perfect, preparation is key. Although many of the routes are not technically difficult, the fundamental recommendation is to wear the right footwear. Good hiking or trail running shoes with non-slip soles are ideal for walking safely on uneven terrain such as stones, rocks or sand. Avoiding flip-flops or open-toed shoes, even on coastal routes, is crucial to prevent sprains and other mishaps.
As for supplies, hydration is the most important thing. Always carry enough water with you, especially if you plan to take the longer routes. A small snack, such as a piece of fruit or some nuts, will give you the energy you need. And, of course, don’t forget sun protection: a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are your best allies, even in September and October, when the sun is still shining strongly.
