Menorca in October
Do you know the beautiful island of Menorca, where history and tradition intertwine in a unique experience? During the month of October, the island of Menorca offers a delicious variety of typical dishes that will allow you to explore the authentic gastronomic culture of this wonderful Mediterranean island. Accompanied by a mild and pleasant climate, this period is ideal for tasting traditional dishes and enjoying various activities that will enrich your experience on the island.
In addition, from the last week of September to the first week of October, the Menorcan Gastronomy Show is held every year in more than 35 restaurants on the island with delicious menus prepared for the show.
In the buffets of our hotels, we work closely with local producers to offer local products and also some traditional recipes from the island’s delicious cuisine. If you want to discover the wide culinary offer that has been influenced for centuries by multiple cultures, the best option is undoubtedly to visit the small traditional restaurants that are found in the most peculiar places on the island.
Some gastronomic delights of Menorca that we suggest.
Caldereta de Langosta: Caldereta de Langosta is a true delicacy and one of the most emblematic dishes on the island. The freshness of the lobster is masterfully combined in this soup, giving life to an exquisite and comforting dish. The lobster fishing season runs from April to the end of August, although many restaurants have nurseries and it is still possible to taste this jewel of Menorcan cuisine in October. Some restaurants jealously guard their small tricks and secret ingredients such as chamomile flowers or ‘camomile’, a piece of dark chocolate, a splash of rum…
Mahón cheese: Mahón cheese is another gastronomic treasure that you cannot miss. Whether on a tomato toast for breakfast, as an appetizer before the meal with a good local wine ‘Illa de Menorca’, or even as a dessert with a delicious fig jam, this cheese with protected designation of origin will conquer you. Its unique flavor and creamy texture make it a delicious option at any time of the day. You can enjoy it with advanced maturations of 6-12 months made with raw cow’s milk, or softer with maturations of 3-6 months made with pasteurized milk. You will find it hard not to find it in our buffets.
Oliaigua: Oliaigua is a humble recipe that has evolved over time to become a delicious sofrito soup. With a base of water, oil, tomatoes, green pepper and garlic, it is served in a bowl with a base of toasted brown bread and is combined with seasonal fruit, such as melon or figs. The cooking process is simple, as long as you follow these simple rules: it should never boil, use seasonal pear tomatoes and it is essential to prepare it from one day to the next for the flavors to blend perfectly.
Perol Menorquín: Perol Menorquín, a classic recipe, is a delicious mixture of sliced potatoes and tomatoes covered with breadcrumbs, garlic and parsley, a perfect side dish to accompany meats and fish. It is served gratin and complements your dishes in an extraordinary way.
Raya al Horno: Ray is a very appreciated fish on the island and is the star of several traditional dishes. A delicious option is ray al horno, cooked with a base of potato, onion and tomato, baked traditionally in a clay pot and covered with a mixture of breadcrumbs, garlic, sweet paprika and chopped parsley.
Ensaimada: Finally, we cannot forget to mention the most emblematic dessert of the Balearic Islands: the ensaimada. This sweet and fluffy dough, often filled with cream, chocolate or candied angel hair, is a real treat for the palate. Will you resist trying it? For breakfast or for a snack or whenever you feel like it.
